I don’t know about you, but I am my own worst enemy, my biggest critic.
A lot of the time I am way too harsh on myself, I re-live things I’d rather not and re-read things I know will hurt me more but it’s not an easy habit to break. We as humans are known for beating ourselves up when things go wrong in our lives.
Unfortunately, I am not here to offer you an easy solution to break this habit, all I know is we should all work on ways to be a little kinder to ourselves.
If you’re struggling, here are my top 5 tips.
This may seem like an odd suggestion, but sometimes faking how you feel can actually help you. Pretending to yourself and the outside world you’re fine may not be a healthy long term solution but if you need something to get you through the day; pretending you feel good can sometimes rub off and before you know it, you don’t actually feel as bad as you did at the start of the day.
Write a list of all of the things you are grateful for, they don’t have to be massive, they can be small. What may seem insignificant to others; like the coffee you have just bought, the car you drive to work, anything. The key is focusing on the things we have rather than the things we don’t allowing us to reflect on our life when it can seem so clouded.
Surround yourself with people who make you happy
And keep yourself busy, whether that’s meeting up for a coffee, going for a walk or going out at the weekend. Focus on making plans with people who keep you lifted. And if you’re struggling, open up. Tell someone how you’re feeling. And remember you are never alone.
Take care of yourself
Run yourself a hot bath, put on a face mask, eat some chocolate... do whatever you do to make yourself feel better. Treat your mind as kind as you treat your body. And if you’re bad at that too, don’t worry that can be a work in progress too.
This is a major one for me, when you’re beating yourself up and feeling down on yourself its easy to look at others and feel inadequate, feel like a failure, all of those feelings are completely normal and if you need to feel them then do, just don’t pack up and stay there.
